Congratulations to Marcus Beam of Epes Transport System for being selected as the 2011 Highway Angel Of The Year. Marcus came to the rescue of a woman and her children who were trapped in a wrecked car when no one else would. Others on the scene appeared to be afraid the car would catch fire, but Marcus helped anyway. Well done Marcus.

TruckerHub.com wants to show the world who today’s modern OTR Truck Driver is. Too many people outside the trucking industry have a misconception that truck drivers are nothing more than individuals who can’t get any other kind of job. What most people still don’t realize is that without truckers, nothing in this country would move. Professional truck drivers just that: They are professionals who move the goods and products that make this great nation run.
Truck drivers come from all walks of life, from different cultures, backgrounds, locations with more diversity than any other industry on the planet. Today’s professional truck driver operate the most powerful and advanced trucks ever developed complete with on-board navigation/GPS, on-board computer systems and satellite communications that rival any other transportation based industry. Truck drivers are often on the road for10 days straight or more, away from their families, making sure that goods get delivered to their destinations on time. They have some of the toughest operating regulations of any industry and are constantly under scrutiny by the government on everything from the environment to fuel efficiency to how many hours they must stop each day. And yet, they drive on. Day and night, from coast to coast truck drivers keep heading out to their next destination.
If you are a professional OTR truck driver we want to highlight you on the front page of our website at TruckerHub.com. Send us a photo of you with your rig, name, company you drive for, how long you have been driving and a short bio and we will post it. The way we communicate has drastically changed over the last 5 years. In the past lines of communications between drivers and their home terminals, dispatchers, managers, family and other truck drivers was tedious at best. Email and a phone call were the primary means of communicating with one another.
Now enter Facebook and Twitter. Has there ever been a more perfect way for truck drivers to keep in touch with home, family and friends while on the road? Let’s look at a few of the benefits of using these social channels to keep in touch.
The benefits of using Facebook:
- Build an online community where both drivers and home office can openly communicate
- Allows drivers to communicate with one another
- Provides a way for trucking companies to quickly get the word out to drivers about events or notices
- Often times home office is unaware of daily problems drivers encounter and Facebook provides a way for the right people to contact the driver and resolve those issues.
- Allows for drivers to keep in touch with families and friends while on the road
- By posting job openings on Facebook, drivers can share that information with their friends on Facebook and provide the best referral possible “word of mouth”
- Allows for public employee recognition
- Allows user to resend news to their follower list thereby expanding the reach of your news
- Accessible by computer or smart phone
The benefits of using Twitter:
- Extremely fast and targeted information dissemination
- Provide traffic and weather warnings to drivers
- Allows drivers to share information about road conditions instantly
- Home office can post job openings
- Allows user to resend news to their follower list thereby expanding the reach of your news
- Accessible by computer or smart phone
These are just a few of the advantages of using Facebook and Twitter to communicate with one another both at the driver level and at the home office. There are many, many more ways that both drivers and fleets are using social media to communicate.
With the increasing use of Facebook and Twitter, trucking companies might want to consider including a module on these two systems during new driver orientation. If your new employee does not have a Facebook or Twitter account, set one up for them and show your new drivers how to use them.
Facebook and Twitter have definitely changed the communications landscape and the trucking industry is the ideal place for both of these tools to be used.
What is your opinion on the Facebook and Twitter in the trucking industry?

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber signed a statewide idling bill in law which will take effect on January 1, 2011. The highlights of this bill are a restriction on commercial vehicles from idling more than 5 minutes every hour while on property that is open to the public. There are some exceptions such as idling to operate defrosters, heaters and air conditioner systems. Idling will also be permitted during rest periods when the outside temperature is above 75 degrees or below 50 degrees. Trucks will also be allowed to idle up to thirty minutes during onload or offload operations.
